Food allergy is a serious and potentially life-threatening medical condition that occurs when the body’s immune system reacts unusually to particular foods. Allergic reactions range from mild to severe, and can affect multiple areas of the body simultaneously.
Food allergy symptoms typically develop within seconds or minutes of eating or coming into contact with a food allergen.
Symptoms of a mild-to-moderate allergic reaction may include:
A severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires immediate and urgent treatment. Symptoms of anaphylaxis can quickly develop and worsen, and may include:
Unlike a food allergy, a food sensitivity or intolerance is not caused by your body’s immune system. If you have a food sensitivity or intolerance, the reaction is triggered by your body’s digestive system. A food sensitivity reaction is generally not life-threatening and does not risk progressing to anaphylaxis.
